My Relationship with Media

My current relationship with media stems from our society's demand on information being circulated around the internet. By knowing that media is defined by "the means of mass communication (especially radio, television, newspaper, and internet)," I probably cannot go a day without not encountering media around the world. Without knowledge of what is going on in the world, which is obtained through the exposure of media, life would not necessarily be bad, but simple. By immersing ourselves in the media, it further expands our knowledge of the world, as well as potentially creating a more sociable environment. However, there are some ways that the consumption of the media could be used in a negative manner.

Others as well as myself have probably found ourselves procrastinating on that important homework assignment until the night before it was due. By being obsessed with social media, accompanied with the heavy workload of a high schooler involved in extracurricular activities, it is easy for us to justify ourselves to easily check out from reality, plugging ourselves in to social media devices. There may be an instant gratification, but the ultimate consequence is the fact that media also has a negative influence on its users. That negative influence is the inability to concentrate on a single task, rendering teenagers like myself to be distracted easily and care too much about things that do not matter much. Ultimately, media is a double-edged sword that can do more harm than good unless utilized correctly and responsibly.

  1. Is media being a distraction a fault of the media, itself, or is it our own fault and lack of self control. If its on the media, how do you think we can use it properly to do more good?

    1. Even though media can be used as a distraction, it also has positive uses. As media consumption is mostly bad because of the bad habits of a person itself, self-control and using media for the right reasons is a great tool.
